Shiny and the death defying skink!

Whoever said that money can't buy happiness has clearly not been buying the right things! I present to you my favourite purchase of the post christmas sales -

And it was pretty cheap too. I heart sales. I didn't really buy much there. I mostly splurged on Christmas gift packs (50 to 70% off) and got cooking sauces/ mustards etc. I did get some chocolate. But it was the freddo frog stocking type, so not really much in that. But I'm still happy with my shiny bits.

I go a hell of a surprise this morning when I woke up. I meandered out to the kitchen to get brekkie and what do I see sitting on the bench looking at me? Just the biggest fucking garden skink I've ever seen in my life! How he managed to not be eaten by the cats and end up half masticated in my bed is a mystery to me. Wikipedia says they grow to a maximum of 14 cm, rarely exceeding 9. Well, I tell you this bastard was about 20! Of course wikipedia also called them skinkie's, so I don't have a lot of faith in that article.

He was quite calm for a skink. Though, as usual, quite hard to catch. I chased him under the microwave, under the dishes, back under the microwave, around the cereal, and back under the microwave. Before finally catching him. And, like most skinks, once he was on my wrist, he stayed there. He did try to pop over the edge of the bench, but stopped when he realised it had anoverhang and he couldn't just run down it. Boots was eating her brekkie and watching me with mild interest just happened to see it. And she froze. Mummy was playing with a self propelled toy! And she wanted.

The skink, defying death from the one place he cannot be touched.

So I go thim outside in my potted herbs. He was kinda cute and I hope he sticks around.

Aww, that's adorable! I would've been inclined to keep it as a pet.

New bling for you and at a sale price---you have to be happy with that.
Note to self---write to Cadbury to find out what the hell happened to bags of Strawberry Freddos.
Hope your new pet hangs around--you do like a sizeable lizzard

I'm a huge fan of your boxing day bling! I may even be a little bit jealous! I think it's the season for skinks too, my nephew managed to find one minutes after arriving on Christmas day however he was only a little tacker!

Did you see the part in the Wiki entry that said parsely, sage rosemary and thyme were fatal to skinks...

You are so brave. Growing up I was scared shitless of any kind of lizard. I wouldnt sleep in the house if a lizard had been seen and unaccounted for. Such a wuss!

Skinks, geckos and the like are so rare here in Victoria that when I saw one inside a friend's Brisbane house last year and wanted to scoot it outside, she couldn't understand why.

My Mia just loves skinks. She een got bitten by a bull ant lying on the ground trying to find the skink that were in and out of hiding spots at easter time...
Cool!

My cats loved stalking geckos inside the house when I lived on Maui. Since geckos are such good bug eaters, I would try to get it outside before the kill.

Looks a bit like an immature blue-tongue from the markings. I'm always wrapt to find lizards in our backyard: the environment must have something going for it to support diversity.

You know, a skink, if eaten by a cat, will cause the cat to trip its balls off, hard. Sometimes permanently. I'd keep my cat away from those lizards, unless your cat's a hippie and is into that sort of thing. Even then I wouldn't recommend it, as cats are psychedelic enough as it is. My roommate's cat ate a skink and was never quite the same.

Well, if he decides to take up permanent residence, I'd charge him rent. And make him do the dishes!

My cats enjoy shredding every lizard they can get their claws on. It's strange to watch because they always start by ripping off the tail and then go from there. It's like they want to disassemble it before leaving it for us to find. At least the mice they eat. The lizards they just waste. Frogs, too.
